A Big Honkin' Hole in My Heart

Watch the YouTube video above to see the inspiration for today's post. :)

I'm a HUGE fan of Phineas and Ferb. I own all of the episodes, movies, and CDs. No shame. My love for the show probably stems for my love for children and my heart's appreciation and desire for innocence. And anyway, the Lord can use anything and everything to bring His children back to Him, right? Anything could be used to bring Him glory? Yes. This has happened many a time in my life, but I digress.

Hopefully you watched the YouTube video. To give you a little background, if you have never seen an episode of Phineas and Ferb and/or know nothing about the show, Buford is a bully, and he mainly picks on Baljeet who loves school and is very smart.

In this episode, Baljeet becomes fed up of Buford and doesn't want anything to do with him anymore, and the two go their separate ways. Buford, later on, starts working for Dr. Doofensmirtz, the "villain" of the show who tries to take over the tri-state area. As Baljeet starts accomplishing things and living life on his own without Buford, he realizes how much he misses Buford and that things aren't the same without him. Buford misses Baljeet as well. Thus comes the song "Big Honkin' Hole in My Heart."

There's a really deep, spiritual meaning to this song. As a Christian, it's easy to live like this - you think there is someone or something out there that is better than God, so you turn your back on Him and live life how you want to. Things may be great for a while, but then reality sets in. You find yourself wanting more. You're not happy. Nothing goes right. Nothing even feels right, and you find yourself wondering what's going on.

"How did things get so out of hand?"

"Why can't I find my happily ever after?"

Then, God knocks on the door of your heart. A light immediately turns on. Alarms go off in your head.

"Oh, right. Everything's a mess because I decided to live life without God."

You begin to miss God.

You begin to desire His presence.

Your heart won't be satisfied until you've prayed, until you've opened your Bible.

Until you've made things right.

It is so easy to turn to the right or to the left for answers because you can see, touch, hear the things of this world. It's easy to forget to look heavenward to the One who created you, has a plan for you, and knows what's best for you, because you can't see, touch, or audibly hear Him. However, Colossians 2:10 says, "and in Him you have been made complete..."

We, Christian or not, have a God-shaped hole in our hearts. A hole that only He can fill. No other god that we try to mold with our hands won't be able to fit, no matter how hard we try, no matter how many combinations we come up with.

So, what do we do about this? How do we stay on the straight and narrow and keep looking up? What it comes down to is swallowing our pride and eating a piece of humble pie. We need to realize that we're not alive to serve ourselves and to make sure our desires our met. It's not about us. Life is MUCH more bigger than us. It's about the glory of God and the spreading of His light to every inch of this earth. Once we get that through our thick, stubborn heads, we can permanently "set our sights on things about" (Colossians 3:2). No, we won't get things right every time. We will be tempted to take control. We will even give in on occasion, but we will always have the chance to get back on track. God will never stop calling us home. It's just up to us to accept that call to not only come back but to stay the course.

It can be done! Are you willing to die to yourself, to take up your cross and follow Him (Matthew 16:24)?

"I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." - Philippians 4:13
